Question: How does the diet work?

Very well, when done properly.

OK that may have been a bit flippant. Let’s give you a more down to earth answer, albeit a very brief one.

The diet works by increasing the proportion of the protein element of your diet to the carbohydrate element of your diet. In simple terms, proteins generally take far longer to digest than carbohydrates. That means, if you eat something that’s mainly protein the body takes the time to slowly metabolise that protein. This in turn means the energy you get from it is slowly released for use by the body.

To a certain extent, it’s that slow release that’s the key to controlled carbohydrate dieting. Your body is able to get the energy more or less as it needs it - it’s a little bit like drip feeding a plant. You give it just as much water as it needs to grow well, but not so much that it is drowning.

Because the protein based foods take longer to break down, in simple terms they stay in your stomach longer so you don’t feel like you’re getting hungry as quickly. If you’re not getting hungry as quickly, then you do not want to eat as much as you used to.

As you’re not putting as much food in your stomach, over a shortish period of time the size of your stomach starts to shrink. This then makes it become full by eating less food than you used to. This process continues until you get to the point that you are eating just about enough for your body’s needs on a day to day basis.

In addition, if you get to the stage where you are in ketosis, then the body starts to use the fat as a source of energy. That’s why it’s a very effective form of fat loss.
