Question: I have just started to get really bad breath. What is the cause and how can I get rid of it fast?
Many folk have the idea that bad breath is caused by keytone bodies being exhaled.
Well, to a limited extent that is true. However the main cause of bad breath is actually down to a change and imbalance in the levels of bacteria in your digestive system all the way from your mouth down.
Mouth. When food particles break down in and around your teeth they can often be the cause a foul odour.
Eating foods containing spicy oils is another source of bad breath. Things like onions and garlic are the best known examples. But other vegs can cause bad breath too. Once these foods are digested and the spicy, pungent oils find their way into your bloodstream, they’re carried to your lungs where they are given off in your breath until the food has gone from your body.
The solution here is good dental hygiene.
Low level dehydration is a particular aspect of a lowcarb regime. because in the early stages we are encouraged not to drink tea, coffee and so forth. Most people are not very conscientious in replacing this liquid by, say drinking more water, which means that they get a dry mouth (xerostomia). Remember, saliva helps to keep the teeth clean. See above.
Stomach. A change in the type of food you eat can cause an upset in the balance of the natural bacteria in your digestive tract. In some cases this can be severe enough to cause excessive gas and the unpleasant smells that can come with it. Also, not eating regularly can result in much the same problem but with more of a sickly smell.
The solutions here are to eat foods that are good bacteria friendly such as yoghurt and to make sure you eat regularly.
Obviously you may not want to eat more so just divide up your daily allowance into four or five sittings.
Doing this you will find that the incidences of bad breath are eliminated and you will feel much more satisfied during the day.
Key solutions
• Drink more.
• Eat regularly
• Feed your friendly bacteria
• Brush your teeth
Bottom line
We maintain that when you are doing any Lowcarb Diet properly that diet-related causes of bad breath should not be that severe and certainly something that is readily treatable.
